Firefly: Amazing TV show, but how will it fare as a game?

Firefly was created in 2002 by Joss Whedon. To quote Daniel Williamson on IMDB.com, Firefly was about “Captain Malcolm ‘Mal’ Reynolds is a former galactic war veteran who is the captain of the transport ship “Serenity”. Mal and his crew, ensign Zoe Alleyne Washburne; Zoe’s husband, pilot Hoban ‘Wash’ Washburne; muscular mercenary Jayne Cobb; young mechanic Kaylee Frye; former Alliance medical officer Simon Tam; his disturbed teenage sister River (both on the run from the interplanetary government “The Alliance”); the beautiful courtesan Inara Serra; and preacher Shepherd Book do any jobs, legal or illegal, they can find as the Serenity crew travels across the outskirts of outer space.”

The show was basically a space-age western. They went onto terraformed planets that were desert based (as is with most westerns), and on more than one instance had to use muscle in order to overcome a problem. Anyway, they had an amazing cast, and an amazing storyline written, which was a great equation for the amazing show that it was.

At San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) in July 2013, FOX Digital Entertainment and QMx Interactive have announced that FireFly Online is in development and is looking to be released in the summer of 2014. The game is claimed to be a multi-user social roleplaying game where you are the captain with the job of finding a crew, find a job, and keep flying. The game will be released on iOS and Android devices, but is that what we want?

Anytime I see a game like this pop-up online, I’m thinking it’s going to be more like Farmville, and less like Star Ocean- which honestly, I’d much rather it be. It would be awesome if you could walk around different planets, fight other crews, or expand your crew by building a ship and seeing if you can pick anyone up on an alien planet (who is an actual real person- replaced by a computer avatar only when not online).

It would be fantastic to see if you could customize your character to either look like you- or as close to you as possible. I think it would be amazing if this came out on xBox or Playstation systems and used your avatar on their systems as your character. How cool would that be? You could choose you allegiances (“brown coat” or “Alliance”), and chose your role (“Captain”, “Pilot”, “Mercenary”, “Mechanic”, “Doctor”, “Shepherd”, etc.) and go on missions. Turn it from an online social game to something more along the lines of World of Warcraft. If they made it like that, I think I would by it. Think about it. A Firefly version of World of Warcraft where you get to lead your own adventure. That would be amazing. Right?

Here’s the problem. Most of it has been kept pretty quiet. They released enough to make Firefly fans (myself included) antsy, but not enough to spoil the surprise. So we’re stuck on the edge of our seats until next summer, hoping- nay, praying- that Firefly online will be amazing! Who knows? Perhaps it will be constructed like World of Warcraft were you can chose your allegiances, and role, and customize your own character. All I know is this. Come summer 2014. I’m buying it. I will buy a subscription the day it is available and play it as long as I can stand it. The only question I have for you is: “Will I see you in The Verse?”
