Pokemon X and Y Review

On September 30th, 1996 the United States was forever changed with the release of two video games: Pokemon Red and Blue. Well, over 18 years later and more than 25 games later the franchise is still going strong with it’s strongest selling games to date: Pokemon X and Y. Who would’ve have thought this pocket monster fighting game would somehow reach into all of our hearts and stay there for such a long time.

Pokemon X and Y takes place in the Kalos Region where you, the protagonist have just recently moved to. Along with your friends Shauna, Tierno, and Trevor you set out on a journey through the Kalos region to become Pokemon masters. You have to defeat the eight gym leaders as well as thwart the plans of the evil Team Flare, who wish to wipe out humanity and keep the planet beautiful.

Though, over the years the story has never really changed too much a couple of new features were added to this Pokemon game to keep it interesting for all new players and veterans alike. One of the immediate differences you will notice with Pokemon X and Y is the game is now presented in fully 3D polygonal graphics, allowing for more interactivity with the world and more dynamic action during battles. Along with this you also have the ability to customize the look of your hero. From Gender, to skin tone, and even hair color. Mega Evolution is one of the biggest differences in battling for Pokemon. With the help of a Mega Stone you can temporarily evolve a fully evolved Pokemon, such as Blastoise and Venusaur into a more powerful Mega form. Pokemon-Amie lets players interact with their Pokemon using the touchscreen of the 3DS and camera. You can play with them and give them treats to help strengthen your bond with your Pokemon, ultimately affecting the way the Pokemon will act during battle. Super Training is a featured minigame that helps build the base stats of your Pokemon, which in turn unlocks training bags that can be used by Pokemon to grow stronger on their own.

After hearing about all these new features I would imagine that you would be sold on this game if haven’t already purchased it. Well, there is still more to offer in this game so let me put my best pitch clothes on and tell you about it. With the new Player Search System (PSS), players can keep track of various online players, including strangers, allowing for easy trading or battling. Wonder trade is another new feature that allows players to make blind trades with anyone in the world. Watch out though when using Wonder Trade through my personal experience it seems flooded with Pigeys, but if you like Pigeys an unhealthy amount it is perfect for you.

Over 18 years later and somehow this game found a way once again to take up my time and the time of all of my friends, but that truly is the beauty of Pokemon. Even if it is just for a couple of weeks or months you get to relive your youth playing these games and feel like a kid. What better experience can you have with a game than that?
